Our Past

The firm was founded in 1934 by David Toenjes. Rising out of the utilitarian beginnings of the Depression in Iowa, the firm’s foundation was solidly formed creating practical architecture in a conservative environment.

After World War II and the resulting baby boom, the firm’s practice grew in size and diversity and ushered in the development of its largest market, Education. Though the firm’s work remained diversified, it became known for creating solidly built buildings, on time and within budget.

During the Fifties, Sixties and Seventies that solid foundation set the base for the firm’s growth during this expansionist period. Remaining solidly practical, the firm created standards of practice and building that continue to serve as guiding principles today. Through concerns of energy in the Seventies, technology in the Eighties and Nineties, and sustainability in the new millennium, the firm remained strong and reacted nimbly, creating a lasting practice founded on a strong structure.

Infused with new design talent in the decades since, this combination of creative energy and humble beginnings, sets the stage for our successful practice today. Our firm continues to address ever-changing opportunities in the world by building on that foundation laid back in 1934; creatively address our client’s goals by offering innovative, responsible design solutions.
