Completed in February of 2006, the new 98,000 SF, three-story building houses grades five through eight for Decorah Schools. The new construction uses details, massing, and materials to respect the adjacent historical school building, while creating its own unique identity. To compliment the state-of-the-art classrooms, the facility included a cafeteria/commons, kitchen, competition gym and locker rooms, as well as band, orchestra and vocal music rooms. The two-story media center and adjacent computer lab are a focal point within the new school.
The project’s design was also able to create a division of classes by placing the 5th and 6th grades on the first floor and the 7th and 8th grades on the second floor. As part of the new facility, improved security and safety features were incorporated which were not present in the school it replaced.
